Chapter 8

The Golden Medical Center (G.M.C.) looked quietly over the town of Golden in the cold, brisk night. The newly built hospital stood ten stories tall and illuminated the skyline among the Rocky Mountains.

With multiple wings throughout the building that focused on different medical fields, many doctors from around the world made their way to G.M.C. as a primary residence.

Dr. Hudson Klemens sat in his office on the fifth floor, the intensive care unit, with his door closed. His head rested in the palms of his hands while he rubbed ferociously at his temples. A migraine had nagged him all day and he popped two more pills to try and fight it.

Maybe if I could just go to sleep my brain wouldn’t try to kill me.

Dr. Klemens hadn’t slept in 24 hours due to a busy day filled with two surgeries and four new patients admitted due to a nasty car accident that had occurred on Sixth Avenue leading into Golden.

Part of the headache could be attributed to the fact that he had to deliver the unfortunate news of paralysis to a teenage boy earlier in the day. The boy attended a small high school in Denver and reached local fame as an up-and-coming basketball star. He rode shotgun in one of the cars involved in the car crash.

When T.J. Lightfoot learned he would never walk again, the air seemed to suck out of the room. His parents sobbed as the three hugged from his hospital bed. T.J. had a full ride scholarship lined up to play basketball for the University of Connecticut that he had signed at the mid-year point of his senior year in high school. He climbed his way to the twenty-ninth ranked recruit in the nation to gain attention from practically every college in the United States.

All dreams of playing professionally flew out of the window and he would need to find a new passion in life. Dr. Klemens felt sick to his stomach as he spoke to the Lightfoot family. The damage to his spine proved too severe for surgery to repair, and even with a reputation as a miracle worker, Dr. Klemens could not help. He took these rare cases to heart, which usually resulted in binge drinking to make the guilt go away.

He had started turning to the bottle while in medical school. The stress became too overbearing at times and he needed the edge relieved. High pressure situations always caused a headache and he found alcohol to be the only true medicine to help. If it weren’t for his good friend, Jack Daniels, Dr. Klemens would have dropped out of medical school and been known as Hudson Klemens, the car salesman.

His natural knack for persuasion never left him as he could sell water to a fish. The money nor lifestyle of a doctor never called to him. He genuinely enjoyed helping people and wanted a life dedicated to doing just that. In college, medical school may as well have been the furthest
